Climatic chambers are essential tools for scientific research and testing of products or materials. In their commonly available models, they can perform hundreds of different tests and trials, yet it is never enough.
In fact, each company has its own specific needs and this is where customized climatic chambers come into play. Buying a climatic chamber is an investment that is destined to last and it is right that the final product has all the necessary characteristics to satisfy the customer.
In today's article, we will explain what a basic climatic chamber does and what are the most common implementations required in custom climatic chambers.
What is a Basic Climatic Chamber
The climatic chamber is a technologically advanced instrument capable of simulating certain environmental conditions.
It consists of a compartment hermetically insulated from the outside, inside which some environmental parameters can be set, adjusted and monitored.
There are two environmental parameters that a climatic chamber must be able to adjust to be defined as such: temperature and relative humidity.
We can therefore say that the control of temperature and relative humidity are both necessary and sufficient conditions to define a basic climatic chamber. However, sometimes they are not enough.
Custom climatic chambers add additional functions or significantly modify the structure of the chamber.
Let's see the most common ones.

Custom Climatic Chamber: Size
The measurements of the climatic chamber are among the most common requests during customization. Standard climatic chambers have various measurements that fall, however, in a range between those of an oven and a common refrigerator. Then there are two categories that go beyond the norm: benchtop climatic chambers and walk-in climatic chambers.
The first, as the name suggests, are small chambers that can be placed on a bench and are usually mass-produced.
The second, however, are called walk-in because their dimensions are such as to allow an operator to enter them. Sometimes they are so large that they allow testing on entire vehicles!
These are usually custom-made and we have discussed them in detail here.
Customized Climate Chamber: Diffusers
Sometimes, to reproduce a certain climate, it is not enough to control the temperature and relative humidity. Precipitation has a significant impact on the wear of products and materials, especially those subject to corrosion.
And this is where diffusers come into play.
Customized climate chambers can be equipped with various types of diffusers to simulate the effects of precipitation
Among the most common is the salt spray diffuser, we talked about it here.
Customized Climate Chamber: Lighting
Finally, the sun remains to be considered among the atmospheric agents that most influence the durability of products and materials.
With special lighting systems, customized climate chambers can be equipped to reproduce various types of sunlight for the most diverse types of tests.
These climate chambers are also mass-produced and called growth chambers, but they are specifically designed for the cultivation of plants and small organisms.
