Sunlight is the main source of life, essential for both vital and productive processes: from chemical reactions in materials to the influence on the durability of paints and fabrics, up to the growth and health of plants.
For us, however, sunlight is also a variable that is difficult to control precisely. For this reason, LED Testing, or tests carried out with LEDs that simulate sunlight in the laboratory, is a fundamental tool. This technology allows us to reproduce the characteristics of sunlight in controlled environments for different purposes.

What is LED Testing
With LED testing we refer to all those tests that use specific LEDs designed to emit a light that imitates the solar spectrum, in a laboratory environment.
These tests are essential in different sectors but sometimes for very different purposes. We can divide LED testing into two main categories that involve distinct industries and sectors.
On one side we have LED Testing for products and materials, on the other LED Testing for crops.

LED Testing for Products and Materials
In industry, the resistance of materials to light is a key factor for the quality and durability of products such as paints, plastics, fabrics and other materials that are subject to degradation under sunlight.
LED testing in this context allows to simulate in a controlled environment the effect of sunlight in a constant and repeatable way, evaluating how materials react to UV radiation and to different intensities and types of light. For example, the paint of a car with LED can be exposed to intensive light cycles to identify possible color variations or signs of deterioration.
These tests are generally performed in accordance with internationally recognized standards such as ISO 4892-1:2024 or ASTM G154, which indicate the procedures for performing LED Testing on various materials.
LED Testing for Plant Crops
In agriculture and horticulture, LED testing offers the possibility of improving crop productivity by simulating optimal light conditions. The laboratory instrument used there is the growth chamber.
Growth chambers are laboratory instruments in which it is possible to monitor temperature and relative humidity and can be equipped with different sets of LEDs to simulate different types of solar illumination, depending on the crop in question.
At this time, all over the world, research institutes are experimenting on plants and plant crops to identify the optimal conditions and produce more resistant species, in order to combat famine and the consequences of global warming.
