On these pages we often talk about how climatic chambers are used to carry out tests on products and materials.
However, climate simulation is not only relevant for testing inorganic materials, but is also used for the culture, growth and preservation of organic organisms and samples.
This is the case of the incubation chamber.
What is incubation?
First of all, however, we must understand what natural incubation is and what artificial incubation is.
In biology, incubation refers to the period in which an organism develops and grows, maintained at specific temperatures, generally inside eggs.
By artificial incubation, however, we mean all those techniques that - thanks to the control of crucial environmental parameters - allow the growth and development of any organism, even those that do not naturally undergo incubation.
In order to simulate incubation, researchers make use of specifically designed laboratory instruments, known as incubation chambers.

What is an incubation chamber and how is it made?
An incubation chamber is a laboratory instrument designed to simulate a series of environmental conditions suitable for the growth and maintenance of specific life forms.
Like climatic chambers, incubation chambers consist of a compartment completely isolated from the outside and within which it is possible to alter and monitor some key environmental parameters.
Temperature and relative humidity are the main environmental parameters that any tool capable of advanced climate simulation must be able to alter and monitor.
But, in addition to these, lighting also plays a key role in incubation chambers.
These rooms can in fact be equipped with a variety of artificial lighting sets that reproduce the effect of different types of sunlight and are essential for the growth of many crops.
What is an Incubation Chamber used for?
Thanks to their characteristics, incubation chambers play a crucial role in many sectors, including medical and scientific research and the agricultural industry.
In scientific research, incubation chambers allow you to create ideal conditions for the growth of cell, bacterial and other microorganism cultures. These tools allow researchers to study biological processes in a controlled environment, which is critical for experiments that require precision and repeatability. For example, cell cultures used for cancer research and to test new drugs.
But the incubation chambers are also used for agricultural research.
In fact, inside them it is possible to experiment on plant species of all types in order to isolate the best cultivation methods and more resilient species which can then be cultivated on a large scale.

The FDM Incubation Chamber
Drawing on its experience in the field of environmental simulation which has lasted for over 70 years, FDM - Environment Makers offers its line of incubation chambers suitable for all the purposes described above.
Our technicians can also meet your needs and design a customized incubation chamber as we did with the University of Turin. Read the story here.
