What is an Open Top Chamber and What is it Used For

 

As you can imagine from the word, open top chambers are rooms open on one side, the upper one.

The open top chamber is mainly used in the ecological and environmental field to simulate natural outdoor conditions. Thanks to its particular configuration, in fact, the open top chamber allows samples, such as plants or materials, to be exposed to a certain technological environmental control but without completely closing the environment, thus ensuring interaction with the external climate.

Inside the open top chamber, it is in fact possible to impose and monitor various environmental parameters such as temperature, relative humidity and CO2 density, but all within a certain limit since the space, in fact, is not hermetically isolated from the outside but has a continuous exchange with it.

Open Top Chamber Vs. Growth Chamber

 

Climatic chambers are also used for environmental studies on plants and vegetable crops. The climatic chambers specifically designed for this type of test are called growth chambers.

Belonging to the family of climatic chambers, growth chambers are rooms hermetically isolated from the outside, obviously on all sides. Inside them, in addition to the control of temperature and relative humidity, it is possible to simulate solar illumination using different types of LED sets that correspond to different intensities and different qualities of the light spectrum.

For these reasons, the growth chamber offers a greater degree of control over environmental conditions. It is in fact possible to guarantee that all environmental parameters are kept perfectly constant for the entire duration of the test and that these conditions are precisely replicable.

Therefore, where open top chambers are recommended to study the interaction between a sample and a specific environment that actually exists, growth chambers are the ideal choice for replicable tests that aim to obtain precise and reliable information for research purposes.
